JORDAN’S PRINCIPLE
On Tuesday, May 10 students at NLS will be recognizing Bear Witness Day.
Students are asked to bring a teddy bear to learn with them on this "beary"
important day. Students will be learning about Jordan's story, an Indigenous
boy in Manitoba that was very sick and wasn't able to access the healthcare he
needed because of a funding dispute between the provincial and federal
government. After Jordan passed away and after many adults and children
advocated for change the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal determined that
the Government of Canada's approach to services for First Nations children
was discriminatory and Jordan's Principle was founded. Students will be
learning about Jordan's Principle; a piece of legislation that makes sure that all
First Nations children in Canada are provided with the funding needed to meet
their health, social, and educational needs. Classes will be having
conversations about fairness, reconciliation, and how students can be change
makers in their school and community. Please see
